The "Pickens Plan"
Developed my oil magnate, T. Boone Pickens, the basis of the Pickens Plan removing the dependence of the United States from foreign oil. Obviously, this has become a hot topic due to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but there environmental implications of implementing such a plan.
T. Boone Pickens has huge stakes in American oil companies so one could assume this is a strategy to pull the US away from foreign oil in order for him to prosper. Is it?
Much of the Pickens plan revolves around alternative energy sources of Wind and Natural gas. Natural gas is abundant in the United States and is much cleaner than are petroleum burning power plants. Natural Gas plants already supply 20% of the electricity of the United States, with the plants running at only 50% capacity.
If the Natural Gas electric plants were running at full capacity, carbon emissions from coal and petroleum burning plants would be cut in half!
Natural Gas is abundant in the Americas with huge pockets in Colorado, Utah, Alaska, and many other states. Many homes use Natural Gas as a means to heat their homes in the winter already, so the infrastructure is present.
Natural Gas is also not a "depleted" commodity like Oil is, because we actually can make Natural Gas from decomposing plants, waste and manure. Sure it may not smell pretty, but it is abundant!
The question is, if everyone knows Natural Gas is far better for the environment and is much more abundant in the Americas, why aren't we using it as much as Oil? Could it be the lobbyists in Washington? I will let you decide.Generate Free Energy
